Photography Workshops

We may be running some Photography Basics workshops over the coming months. Please see the details below.

If you would like to attend one of these workshops, or if you would like more information, then please email info@hlpg.co.uk. You don’t have to be a member of the group to attend.

Feedback from previous workshops:

‘A big thank you to Stephen and Frank for presenting the photography course today. I found it very interesting and extremely helpful indeed, not to say very well presented. Shame we couldn’t get outside because of the weather, but the photo comparison was just as helpful. Thank you again, and looking forward to attending more workshops’. Shaun

‘Thank you so much Stephen and Frank for your time. You have both helped me to have more confidence to use my camera and to keep trying. I realize there is still a lot to learn’. Lynda

I’d like to thank you and Frank for running the photography workshop on Saturday and for explaining things so well and being so patient with everyone. Julia

Thank you for running the photography workshop with help from Frank. You explained everything very clearly and I’m sure I’ll get the hang of the manual settings if I just set aside time to practice. Thank you both for being so patient and answering questions that probably seemed obvious to you. Julie

Photography Workshop 1 - Getting to Know Your Camera

Usually run from 10 am to 1 pm on a Saturday - Cost £25

This is a practical workshop aimed at understanding your camera, how it works, and moving away from ‘auto’ mode.

The aim is for you to leave this workshop with confidence in how to control your camera and take better photos.

We start by clarifying several common terms, which will be used later in the workshop, before moving on to discuss the more commonly used buttons and controls on your camera, setting up your camera, and default settings. The relationship between shutter speed, aperture, and ISO (the Exposure Triangle) is discussed at length, and how changing one of these settings can affect the other two.

A practical session follows, taking photographs outside with different apertures, shutter speeds, and ISO settings. We then meet up to look at and discuss the results, and resolve any further queries.

Photography Workshop 2 - Improving your Photography and your Images

Usually run from 10 am to 1 pm on a Saturday - Cost £25

This workshop intends to build on the knowledge and experience of Workshop 1 and look at how you can improve your photographs by employing simple but proven techniques.

We start by recapping some of the technical terms introduced in the first workshop and introducing some more before discussing what we need to consider before taking a photograph.

This is followed by a discussion on common errors and mistakes, and how to recognise and avoid them. We then look at the rules of composition and how these rules can be applied, hence improving your images.

A practical session follows, taking photographs outside using the rules of composition previously discussed. We then meet up to look at and discuss the results, and resolve any queries.
